Odds slashed on England star winning Sports Personality of the Year

Three Lions are going from strength to strength on the pitch and could win awards off of it.

England hero Raheem Sterling has had his odds cut to win Sports Personality of the Year, following sparkling performances with Manchester City and England.

The forward grabbed his fourth goal and second assist of the qualifying campaign for the Three Lions last night in just two games, prompting a betting frenzy on the 24-year-old.

Since kick-off last night, 84% of bets on the eventual winner of SPOTY have been placed on Sterling winning the coveted award.

That’s resulted in bookmakers cutting his odds from 33/1 into as short as 16/1 to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Geraint Thomas.

That now makes him more likely to win the award than Harry Kane, Rory McIlroy, Katrina Johnson-Thompson, Alun Wyn Jones and Jos Buttler.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “No footballer has received the kind of targeted abuse that Raheem Sterling has in the last 18 months, from press and fans alike.

“However, that’s a name that will be remembered long in the minds of Montenegro defenders, and that of the England faithful – due to his sparkling performances for club and country.

“That’s resulted in bookmakers slashing odds on the 24-year-old becoming the first footballer since Ryan Giggs in 2009 to win the award and the first English footballer since David Beckham in 2001.”
