The forward is also the third favourite to win the Golden Boot
Bookmakers have unanimously slashed odds on Lioneses forward Ellen White being named Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY), ahead of tonight’s crunch game with the US.
The English international was 66/1 to win the award just last month, although, that’s now been cut into 20/1 with the Lionesses involved in tonight’s semi-final.
White is also hot on the heels of the market leaders in the Golden Boot race, now priced at 10/3 second favourite behind Megan Rapinoe (15/8) and Alex Morgan (5/4).
The flurry of bets has resulted in White easily in the top 10 favourites for SPOTY, with team-mate Steph Houghton also in with a chance at 16/1.
In total, 28% of all bets on the eventual winner have backed White, far more so than red hot favourite Raheem Sterling, who is favourite at 7/1.
Elsewhere, F1 star Lewis Hamilton is second favourite to win the award at 8/1, followed by Team GB’s Dina Asher-Smith.
In a big year of cricket, England’s Joe Root is fourth favourite at 14/1, with his side still in the Cricket World Cup and The Ashes to look forward to this summer.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “SPOTY looks wide open this year, and a World Cup triumph for the Lionesses would surely propel Ellen White into favouritism.
“With a Golden Boot also a major possibility, White may well become the first footballer to scoop this prestigious award since Ryan Giggs in 2009.”
