There's a new contender to replace Rafa Benitez according to bookies.
Bookies have slashed odds on Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking over as manager of Newcastle United from 20/1 to as short as 5/1. However, one is standing firm at 20/1 best price.
He’s dominated the betting today too, with 42% of bets on the market he’s the most backed candidate.
The Dutchman is currently a free agent having decided not to renew his contract at Feyenoord at the end of last season.
Van Bronckhorst, who was in charge of the club for four years, guided Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years back in 2017.
Having finished third in the league last season, the 44-year-old is now seeking a new challenge and the Premier League is said to be his desired destination.
Highly respected as a player, with 106 caps for the Netherlands and a host of top clubs to his name, van Bronckhorst is still in the early years of his career as a manager.
With Rafa Benitez announcing he would leave St James’ Park last week, Mikel Arteta is currently the favourite to replace him at 7/2.
Former Everton boss Roberto Martinez is priced at 5/1 while caretaker manager Neil Redfearn would be a low cost choice as short as 7/1.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Newcastle’s next manager will have big boots to fill. Benitez had done a brilliant job of steadying the club despite pitiful support from the club’s owner.
The Toon are now 7/2 to be relegated in the coming season and fans may be concerned to see two inexperienced bosses in Mikel Arteta and Gio van Bronckhorst topping the market.”
