The forward has fallen out with the manager at St Mary’s and his departure is imminent
Newcastle United are now hot favourites to sign Charlie Austin this window and have been cut as short as 13/8 favourites after being available at 11/1 just under a fortnight ago.
59% of bets in the last week have been on the Magpies securing the striker’s signature, with newly promoted Aston Villa and Sheffield United receiving 16.4% and 14.8% respectively.
Last week it was revealed Austin launched a dressing-room tirade against Ralph Hassenhuttl when he was told he will not be linking up with the first team during pre-season.
The 30-year-old would be Steve Bruce’s first signing as Toon boss, as he looks to fill the void left by the departure of last season’s strike force, Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez.
Aston Villa are looking short of quality up front since Tammy Abraham returned to Chelsea and they are 9/2 second favourites along with Chris Wilder’s side.
Oddschecker spokesman, Callum Wilson: "Charlie Austin only scored twice in 25 league appearances for the Saints last season and is yet to prove himself as a consistent performer in the top flight.
"The 30-year-old might end up being the easier option compared to young Hoffenheim striker Joelinton, who the club are also rumoured to be interested in."
