Flurry of bets placed on Jose Mourinho taking over from Zidane at Real Madrid

The Special One has now overtaken Mauricio Pochettino as favourite

Real Madrid’s hammering last night has resulted in a flurry of bets being placed on Jose Mourinho taking over from the severely under-pressure Zinedine Zidane.

The former-Manchester United manager has been backed into clear favourite, from 7/4 into 6/5, meaning he has now overtaken Mauricio Pochettino at the top of the market.

Since the final whistle in their Champions League tie against PSG, 56% of all bets have been placed on the Special One returning to the Bernabéu.

Elsewhere, Mauricio Pochettino is the second favourite to take over Los Blancos at 9/2, with Massimiliano Allegri another market mover.

The Italian has been cut from 8/1 into as short as 11/4 to be the next permanent manager of Real Madrid and has been subject to 8% of all bets following last night’s game.

Madrid legend Raul features prominently in the betting at 12/1, followed by another in the shape of Guti at 14/1.

Sticking with that theme, ex-Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso chimes in next at 20/1, the same price as current Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

Last night’s humbling at the hands of PSG marked the first time since 2013 that Madrid has lost consecutive Champions League games and marked their joint-heaviest ever opening matchday defeat.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Always the man for the big occasion, it would be very on-brand for Jose Mourinho to end his sabbatical with a dramatic return to Real Madrid."

“The club looks rudderless under Zinedine Zidane, and it cannot be long before Florentino Perez wields the axe once again, leaving the door ajar for The Special One."
