Granit Xhaka could lose the captain's armband after his outburst at fans on Sunday.
Bookmakers do not think Arsenal skipper Granit Xhaka will wear the armband against Wolves next Saturday, following the extraordinary scenes during the Gunner’s home tie with Crystal Palace.
Major firms make him a 7/4 second-favourite shot to lead the North London team out at the weekend. Instead, they think Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the man who will take on the leadership.
They rate the striker as the most likely to don the armband at 5/6, which is an implied probability of 54.5%.
Elsewhere in the market, centre back David Luiz is the third most likely to take over captaincy at 7/1, followed by Alexandre Lacazette at 8/1.
After a dismal performance from the Swiss, the Arsenal faithful were enraged when he slowly walked off the pitch when substituted.
Unai Emery’s men were in desperate need of a goal after surrendering a two goal lead to Crystal Palace.
Xhaka did not seem interested, however, and when subbed threw the captain’s armband towards Aubameyang and then trudged off. He was then booed and staggeringly reacted, jeering the Arsenal fans on before swearing at parts of the stadium.
These were shocking scenes at Arsenal and their issues on and off the field seem to have come to boiling point.
It remains to be seen whether he will even start for Arsenal this week, he is 6/4 to play in the EFL Cup on Wednesday against Liverpool and 11/10 to be in the starting eleven against Wolves.
There may be no way back for the midfielder and he is 9/4 to leave Arsenal before the 3rd of February 2020. The 27 year-old may have just blown his final chance to play for the Gooners ever again.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Arsenal fans rarely hesitate to vent their frustration these days, but the toxicity displayed at Granit Xhaka's substitution felt like a watershed moment on Sunday.
“The club captain certainly let the jeering Gunners fans know his feelings towards their discontent, sparking talk of gaffer Unai Emery stripping the Swiss midfielder of the armband."
