England’s captain continues to drift in the market
With the Euros rapidly approaching, a number of injuries to England attackers have left Gareth Southgate with some big decisions.
But which marksman will Southgate side with? Oddschecker has assessed the potential options ahead of the major tournament this summer.
The Three Lions talisman and captain is facing an uncertain amount of time on the side-lines, and has consequently drifted in the market.
Prior to his hamstring injury, Kane was 1/50 to make the plane, but that price has lengthened all the way out to 1/5.
Following the same betting patterns as Harry Kane, Rashford was as short as 1/33 to go to the Euros.
However, his injury being further exacerbated in the Wolves cup tie has resulted in a similar odds movement and is now 1/8 to be involved this summer.
One of the breakthrough stars of this season, Abraham is heavily odds-on to make the plane, priced at 1/5.
If Kane and Rashford are both out for the tournament, bookmakers are predicting that Abraham is the most likely striker to go.
A man on form on the South coast, Ings is banging them in the Premier League, and has to be seen as England’s most in-form striker.
Having a whopping total of 14 league goals, you would imagine bookmakers are offering a short price on the 27-year-old – but they aren’t.
Ings is 10/3 to make the squad, having been as long as 10/1 earlier this month.
Speaking of strikers in form, Calvert-Lewin is making a late push to be involved, and has been cut from 50/1 into just 5/1 to be included.
He’s the most popular punt in the market, attracting 8% of all bets on who will go to the Euros.
England fans across the country will be watching Vardy’s retirement status with great interest, with the Foxes forward banging them in this season.
Vardy is now 11/2 best price to make the 23-man squad, although is as short as 4/1 with two firms.
Gareth Southgate has been a fan of favouring youth, and Manchester United’s latest prospect to burst onto the scene is more likely than capped Callum Wilson.
Greenwood is 13/2 to make the 23-man squad, having been available at 33/1 at the tail end of last year.
Having already made four appearances in an England shirt, a few eyebrows may be raised with the long price on Wilson being included this summer.
However, a recent barren spell and only netting five times this year in the league have resulted in the Cherries hitman drifting from 5/4, out to 8/1.
Oddschecker verdict:
Oddschecker’s Football Writer Ryan Elliott: “The absence of England captain Harry Kane would be a devastating blow for Gareth Southgate, but the England boss has the comfort of knowing that English strikers have prospered in the Premier League this season.
“Tammy Abraham, who is currently part of the setup, is likely to be on the plane following an impressive campaign with Chelsea, while Danny Ings, on current form, is another no-brainer of a selection.
“The cat would really be thrown amongst the pigeons if top-scorer Jamie Vardy decides to come out of international retirement; Southgate couldn't ignore him then...could he?”
