The Leicester City left-back has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for months.
Bookmakers have slashed odds on Chelsea signing Ben Chilwell this summer, from even money just a few days ago into a best price of 1/6.
The Leicester City and England left-back has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for several months, but this represents a significant shift in the betting market.
Reports in the media this morning suggest Chelsea would be forced to pay a world record fee for a defender in order to capture his signature. The ‘more than £80m’ figure touted would at least equal the fee the Foxes received for Harry Maguire last summer.
Chilwell impressed during Leicester’s 2019/20 campaign, and his loss to injury for the last five games of the restarted season was clearly massive. He was also a useful attacking force, scoring a memorable equaliser against Watford in June.
Stats experts WhoScored.com revealed that Chilwell had only managed one goal in 72 Premier League appearances prior to the 2019/20 campaign, where he scored three and bagged as many assists in his 27 appearances.
Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “With Leicester failing to secure Champions League football for next season, rumours surrounding their star players are inevitable.
“Chelsea’s defensive frailties have been their biggest downfall, and a move for one of England’s talented full backs makes sense. Whether they will pay such a huge fee as well as continue their apparent pursuit of Kai Havertz remains to be seen – he’s now 1/20 to make the move.”
