England World Cup 2022 squad odds: Mason Greenwood the most likely addition to England's squad in Qatar

England World Cup 2022 squad odds: Mason Greenwood the most likely addition to England's squad in Qatar

The odds suggest Gareth Southgate is unlikely to make many personnel changes for his Qatar 2022 squad, as the likes of Mason Greenwood and James Ward Prowse compete for a spot.

England 2022 World Cup squad odds: Greenwood likely to feature

After coming within inches of glory at Euro 2020, it comes as no surprise that bookmakers expect Gareth Southgate’s squad to remain largely unchanged by the time the 2022 World Cup comes around.

However, Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood is the most likely new addition to the squad currently at a best price of 1/2 to be on the plane to Qatar.

The 19-year-old attacker was unlucky to miss out on England’s expanded 26-man Euros squad and will certainly be keen to catch the attention of Southgate.

Bookmakers anticipate Greenwood’s selection to be more likely than Dominic Calvert-Lewin who currently sits at odds of 10/11 to be selected. Despite making the Euro 2020 squad, the Everton striker was afforded just 18 minutes of game time during Euro 2020 and struggled to make an impact with fierce competition for places in forward areas.

Ward-Prowse and Godfrey next most likely to breakthrough

Ward-Prowse and Godfrey are both currently evens to be given an opportunity in England’s 2022 World Cup campaign. Both had solid seasons at club level and were included in Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2020.

James Ward-Prowse is currently 2/1 to move to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window, with the suggestion that it could boost his chances to be selected for England.

Another strong season in the Premier League could put both players right in contention to make the final World Cup squad in 2022.

England’s spine expected to remain unchanged

Seven of England’s Euro 2020 squad currently sit at odds of 1/20 to be on the plane in 16 months time.
Among them are arguably England’s two most impressive Euros performers in the form of Raheem Sterling and Jordan Pickford.

Both players had plenty of doubters in the lead up to Euro 2020 but proved their international credentials with goals and saves that would prove crucial to England’s progress.

Mason Mount, Declan Rice and Phil Foden are also odds of 1/20 and with time on their side they are likely to continue to be central to Southgate’s plans.

The solid centre half pairing of Harry Maguire and John Stones is also likely to continue with both prices at 1/20. England conceded just two goals (excluding penalties) throughout the Euros and looked strong defensively throughout the tournament.

England World Cup 2022 squad odds:

  • Mason Mount - 1/20
  • Phil Foden - 1/20
  • Raheem Sterling - 1/20
  • Jordan Pickford - 1/20
  • John Stones - 1/20
  • Declan Rice - 1/20
  • Harry Maguire - 1/20
  • Harry Kane - 1/16
  • Ben Chilwell - 1/16
  • Luke Shaw - 1/12
  • Marcus Rashford - 1/12
  • Jude Bellingham - 1/10
  • Jadon Sancho - 1/10
  • Bukayo Saka - 1/10
  • Kalvin Phillips - 1/8
