The sacking comes after five consecutive defeats for the Villans.
Dean Smith, who took over at Villa Park in 2018 has become the latest manager to lose his job after a dip in form that sees Aston Villa winless in five.
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is the current favourite to takeover at a best price of 6/4. The former Liverpool captain has enjoyed plenty of success since taking charge at the Ibrox, winning the Scottish Premier League last season in emphatic fashion.
Former Villa assistant manager, John Terry, is also thought to be among the options being considered at a best price of 5/1. Terry spent three years as part of Dean Smith’s managerial team helping to guide them into the top flight.
Pressure had been building on Smith after a run of poor form. Friday’s defeat to Southampton proved to be the tipping point for the board, who have decided a change of manager is necesarry.
