Rafa Benitez’ sacking on Merseyside comes after Everton recorded their sixth defeat in nine games yesterday away to Norwich.
Benitez was seemingly in risky territory with his side in poor form and yesterday’s defeat to Norwich was the final straw for the Everton board as the Spaniard was sacked on Sunday afternoon.
The leading contender for the vacant position is none other than boyhood Evertonian – Wayne Rooney.
He has been plying his trade with Derby in the Championship and he is now being touted to take command at Goodison Park in what would be a fairy-tale return.
He is currently best priced at 11/8 to take over as Everton manager, although there are question marks over the ex Manchester United striker's managerial experience. Frank Lampard made the jump to the Premier League too soon and he ended up being sacked by Chelsea just 18 months in. Rooney will be wary of this should Everton contact him.

Who are the other contenders?
Another ex-Evertonian Duncan Ferguson is the bookies second favourite for the job, best priced at 4/1. He took caretaker charge of Everton prior to Carlo Ancelotti’s surprise appointment and throughout his tenure Everton went unbeaten. A feather in Ferguson’s cap was a victory against Chelsea during that short stint in the Goodison dugout.
The current Belgium manager Roberto Martinez (10/1) has been touted for the job however it’s unclear whether he would be willing to leave ahead of this years World Cup.
Ex Derby and Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is currently at 7/1, Brighton manager Graham Potter, Nuno Espirito Santo and Paulo Fonseca are all at 20/1. A longer shot is Lucien Favre at 25/1, he most recently managed Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
