Hosts Cameroon continue path to AFCON final with Comoros date

oddschecker have the latest on the betting market for Africa’s football showpiece, with less than two weeks to go until the AFCON final.

Hosts Cameroon remain on track for the AFCON final with a favourable looking draw contributing to their short 7/2 best price to win the tournament. A 1-1 draw against Cape Verde was enough to secure top spot in their group, but it’s the draw that seems to have had the most impact on the odds as they face Comoros in the Round of 16.

Comoros were surprise qualifiers from Group C after beating Ghana in the final group match. A red card for Andre Ayew in the 25th minute gave Comoros the extra man in the tie - an advantage they would drive home with a winner in the 85th minute.

Comoros are the longest priced team to go all the way and win the tournament at a chunky 500/1, and Cameroon supporters will be confident of their side progressing. Should they progress, the hosts would then face Guinea or Gambia in the quarter finals – another tie you’d expect them to win.

Two of the competition’s big hitters have been drawn together in the first of the knockout rounds. Ivory Coast vs Egypt is the headline event of the Round of 16, after which either the Elephants – winners in 2015 – or Mohamed Salah’s Egypt will be heading home.

Cameroon’s short price is probably also linked to the quarter final draw for Egypt and Ivory Coast, who would likely run into Morocco in the last eight – should Morocco get past Malawi tomorrow.

Despite winning their last two fixtures, Egypt are currently a 13/1 shot to lift the trophy with bookmakers expecting the in-form Ivory Coast to have too much quality for them. The Elephants remain unbeaten in the tournament so far and an impressive victory over Algeria has seen them cut to a best price 13/2 in the overall winner market.

Tunisia, meanwhile, are significant market movers after dumping the well-backed Nigeria out of the competition in the Round of 16. They were a best price ahead of the fixture but can now be found as short as 7/1 (best price 11/1). They face Burkina Faso in the Quarter Finals on Saturday.
