Frank Lampard is now the odds-on favourite in the next Everton manager odds market, with overnight favourite Vitor Pereira drifting out to a best price 4/1.
It had appeared Pereira to Everton was a done deal, but supporter backlash against his appointment has reportedly prompted the Portuguese coach to remove himself from the running.
The likely beneficiary of his withdrawal would be Lampard (8/15), who has been out of work since last January having left Chelsea in ninth place in the Premier League despite a £200+ million transfer spree in the summer of 2020.
However, that did come after a creditable first season back at Stamford Bridge for Lampard, in which he secured Champions League qualification and reached the FA Cup final despite a transfer ban.
In keeping with their current on-pitch problems, the search for a new manager at Everton – led by majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri - has been fraught with uncertainty and supporter backlash.
Only last week, oddschecker reported on the three closely priced leading contenders for the hotseat, with Pereira and Lampard both absent from the favoured trio.
One of the contenders at the time was Roberto Martinez, whose own connection to the job he was sacked from in 2016 prompted a lukewarm response from Everton fans. It is thought that problems regarding his release by the Belgian FA may also be hindering his chances of reprising the role.
If the reception was lukewarm for Martinez, not yet ruled out but now as long as 33/1 in the next Everton manager odds, it has become aggressively anti-Pereira. In fact, fans have graffitied the stadium with the ‘Pereira Out, Lampard In’ message.
