Derby to stay up odds: Rooney’s men still fighting for Championship survival

oddschecker have the latest on the Derby relegation odds, with Wayne Rooney’s men still fighting to pull off the unlikeliest bid for Championship survival.

Can Derby really stay up?

At the start of this season, it seemed inconceivable that Derby County could stay up and remain in the Championship for next season. After their 21-point deduction, Wayne Rooney’s side could have thrown in the towel, however, they haven’t and neither has the ex-Manchester United striker.

The players have rolled up their sleeves, dug in and managed somehow to climb within five points of safety in 21st position. Credit must be given to Rooney too; he could have abandoned ship, but he has stuck around and if they do manage to survive it will be a big feather in his managerial cap.

Huge clash upcoming for Rooney’s men

There is still plenty of work to do despite snatching a last gasp point away to Birmingham and a huge win against fellow relegation candidates Hull City. They were helped last night too by a stalemate between Reading (21st) and Peterborough (22nd).

Derby are facing a monster clash at home to Peterborough next and if Rooney can steer them to victory, the Rams fans will start to believe that this is truly possible.

Derby relegation odds rivals

The Rams are currently best odds of 2/1 to stay up, having previously been as long as 4/1 at the turn of the year. Expect these odds to shorten even more if they can pick up a victory on Saturday. Next up for Derby is another home clash against Millwall (14th), while two other games that could decide their fate come against Cardiff and Barnsley at the beginning of March.

Reading are still 11/8 to stay up after picking up just one point from their last eight games, but a draw last night at least stopped a run of seven straight defeats. Peterborough are at 7/4 and they haven’t shown much better form – winning just two points from their last eight league games.

Bottom of the table Barnsley are 11/2 to stay up and their form doesn’t make for good reading either with one win in their last 14 league games.

Derby, meanwhile, have shown much better form than their rivals, picking up 17 points from 30 available in their last 10 games. It remains to be seen whether they can pull it off, but they will certainly push all the way to the last day when they play Cardiff at home.
