Championship Promotion Odds: Playoffs within touching distance for Boro

Championship Promotion Odds: Playoffs within touching distance for Boro

oddschecker have the latest on the Championship Promotion odds, including how the fixtures will help Boro in their push for the playoffs.

Who is in contention?

The race for promotion to the Premier League is going down to the wire with many teams currently in contention. One such team is Middlesbrough who currently sit in seventh position. QPR and Nottingham Forest are hot on their heels.

Boro are in an excellent position; they hold one game in hand over Luton (third) and Sheffield Utd (fifth) and two games in hand over Huddersfield (fourth) and Blackburn (sixth). In terms of the form table, in the past 15 games Boro have the fifth best record in the league (joint fifth with Sheffield Utd).

With nine games left to play and the majority of these at home, they will believe they can comfortably make the playoffs and put themselves in contention for a first return to the English top-flight since the 2016/17 season. On that occasion, they were relegated at the first time of asking.

Nottingham Forest are perhaps the best in form team in the league at the moment, taking 11 points from a possible 15 in their last five games. However, on their run-in they travel to Fulham and Bournemouth the two top teams in the league this season.

Middlesbrough’s favourable fixtures

We’re all aware of Boro’s FA Cup run this season taking down two Premier League giants in Man United and Tottenham Hotspur. With their path to the Premier League likely to come in the playoffs, their form in knockout games could be crucial for their confidence.

Their fixtures will also aid them in their push for the playoffs, with five of their last nine games coming at the Riverside Stadium. Six of their games on this run-in come against teams in the bottom half of the table. A mammoth encounter at the Riverside awaits in middle April against fourth-placed Huddersfield.

What are the odds?

Fulham and Bournemouth are pretty much nailed on to gain promotion at this stage so we won’t include them in this. The current favourites outside of those two are Sheffield United (11/4 best odds), closely followed by Nottingham Forrest (4/1), Middlesbrough (9/2) and Luton (6/1).

A few long shots in the market are Blackburn (12/1), West Brom (16/1) and Millwall (28/1). Of course, the picture will become clearer once the playoffs roll around. Even by that juncture, it is anyone’s to win.

We’ve seen scenarios in previous seasons where the fifth and sixth-placed teams have gone on to win promotion. The last fifth-place team to do so were Aston Villa in the 2019 final and the last sixth-placed team were Ian Holloway’s Blackpool in the 2010 Playoff Final.
