Carabao Cup Draw: Odds on Chelsea drift to 12/1 as Blues get Etihad date

The round three draw for the Carabao Cup threw up some interesting matches that have already impacted the competition’s outright winner market.

Manchester City vs Chelsea

A repeat of the 2019 final, this draw has probably had the biggest impact on the outright market. City were favourites coming into the draw and remain as short as 3/1 to claim their ninth title and equal Liverpool’s record.

Chelsea’s odds, meanwhile, have changed significantly. Their odds have drifted from as short as 7/1 in places to 12/1 a day after the draw. They are now fourth favourites to win the tournament outright, behind both Liverpool and Tottenham.

Liverpool vs Derby County

The reigning champions have been dealt a relatively easy draw in comparison to their rivals. They host recently relegated Derby County who are still trying to get use to life in League One. Despite their poor start to the season, the Reds are second favourites behind City to win the cup and have seen their odds stay stable at 6/1 after the draw.

Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham

Antonio Conte’s side will face a difficult task when they visit Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest in November, but they won’t be too disheartened with the draw.

With so many EFL teams left in the draw, drawing any Premier League team makes it that much harder to progress to the next round. Spurs remain third favourites to win the cup but have seen their odds drift from as short as 7/1 in places to 10/1 following the announcement.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa

Manchester United are another team to have been drawn against a Premier League team, as they host 2020 finalists Aston Villa. These two sides were drawn in the third round of the FA Cup last year, with United coming out on top with a narrow 1-0 win.

Although Erik ten Hag has endured a rocky start to his Old Trafford tenure, they remain one of the outright favourites. Yet like Tottenham, United’s odds have drifted from as short as 8/1 to 12/1 since the draw was made last night.

Arsenal vs Brighton

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have had a great start to the season and are the only Premier League team to have won all three of their opening games. However, they have been handed a difficult draw in the third round of the Carabao Cup as Brighton visit the Emirates.

Brighton themselves have had a good start to the season and notably beat United 2-1 away from home on the opening day. Since the draw, Arsenal’s odds of winning the cup have shifted from as short as 7/1 to 12/1 as they drift outside the top five favourites.
