Next Liverpool Manager Odds: Gerrard favourite as Klopp fights seven-year itch

Steven Gerrard is the favourite in the next Liverpool manager odds market as Jurgen Klopp battles the most difficult period of his seven-year spell at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp has rejected talk of the seven-year itch, with reporters repeatedly pointing out that he failed to make an eighth season at both his previous clubs, Mainz and Dortmund.

And despite his stance, it's fair to say that confidence in the German - among the fans at least - has reached its lowest ebb in the seven years since he arrived in October 2015.

Will the Liverpool board really consider moving on a man who was competing for the quadruple just a few months ago? And who are the favourites to replace Jurgen Klopp?

Steven Gerrard

Dearly loved by the Kop due to his exploits as a player, but has Steven Gerrard (7/4) passed his Premier League initiation with Aston Villa? Having taken over from Dean Smith in November of last year, he took the Midlands side from 16th to a 14th placed finish - 10 points above the relegation zone but three places lower than the previous campaign.

Ironically, given the timing of Klopp's biggest problems to date at Liverpool, Villa are back in 16th place where they started under Gerrard. The most concerning thing is a lack of goals - Villa have managed just seven in nine matches. Is he a value pick at just 7/4?

Pep Lijnders

Pep Lijnders (2/1) has been with Liverpool since 2014 except for a short period in 2018 when he failed to gain promotion to the Eredivisie with NEC.

He was sacked by the club less than five months after joining and returned to the Liverpool coaching staff ahead of their Champions League winning season in 2018/19. If the board want continuity he could be the man, but does he have the necessary experience?

Ange Postecoglou

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou (9/2) was among the frontrunners for the Brighton job before the Seagulls plumped for Roberto De Zerbi as Graham Potter's replacement.

Postecoglou arrived at Celtic after Rangers had spoiled the Parkhead club's attempts to win a 10th title in a row in 2020/21. The Aussie helped to turn the tide, beating Rangers to last season's title by four points after 29 wins from 38 matches.

His side have established a two-point lead in the league after nine matches this season (scoring 29 goals and conceding just five) but were knocked out of the Champions League last night after a frustrating home defeat by RB Leipzig.

Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel (11/2) was ruthlessly shown the door by Chelsea after a slow start to the season following a summer in which the Blues spent the most money a Premier League team have ever spent in one single transfer window.

A Champions League winner in his 100-match tenure at Stamford Bridge, the timing of his dismissal was still a surprise despite defeats to Leeds, Southampton and Dinamo Zagreb in the space of just 17 days. Will the man who followed Klopp to both Mainz and Dortmund repeat the feat with Liverpool?
