Mark O’Haire

Southampton, Nottingham Forest & Leeds United

Without a win in six, 14 Premier League defeats in 19 and five points from safety, it’s difficult to make a case for Southampton clawing their way to safety now.

Saints are suffering from a disastrous set of mid-season managerial appointments and must still face four of the top eight, suggesting they’re time in the top-flight is all but done.

Elsewhere, I’ve concerns over Nottingham Forest. Despite being a huge Steve Cooper fan, the Tricky Trees have been handicapped by injuries as well as an unnecessarily bloated squad following an influx of new signings. A tough run-in, worsening City Ground form and a defence that’s shipped multiple goals in eight of 10 spells real trouble for the Reds.

Leeds also vulnerable. The Whites have the firepower to match most of their relegation rivals, yet a tally of only three clean sheets across the campaign puts huge pressure on the frontline to perform and with three top-five opponents still to face, plus just one bottom-half visitor to Elland Road, Javi Gracia’s group could be overhauled in the coming weeks.

Scott Thornton

Southampton, Nottingham Forest & Leicester City

Southampton are four points adrift at the bottom and their recent matches have been uninspiring to say the least. They were brushed aside in their last match against Crystal Palace and suffered a 1-0 defeat to West Ham a few weeks ago.

The Saints still have to face Arsenal, Newcastle, Brighton and Liverpool so it is difficult to see how they are going to win enough points to climb out of the relegation zone.

Nottingham Forest rolled the dice by overhauling their squad in the summer. The gamble hasn’t paid off thus far and they sit in the bottom three with seven  games to play.

Steve Cooper’s side looked toothless in their last match against Manchester United. They face Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal in their remaining matches. Crystal Palace, Southampton and Chelsea are their only three opponents who are currently in the bottom half of the league.

Leicester City chose to sack Brendan Rodgers after losing to Crystal Palace. Since then they’ve lost all three matches, firstly under Adam Sadler and now Dean Smith.

The Foxes have earned just one point in their last nine Premier League matches. Leicester are the most capable of avoiding the drop out of these three but I think they will just fall short. Their matches against Leeds and Everton will be crucial.

Sam McGuire

Southampton, Leicester City & Leeds United

Looking at the remaining fixtures, I think it’ll be Southampton, Leicester City and Leeds United going down this season.

The former two are certs for me but the final one was difficult. Nottingham Forest look lifeless but their fixtures are a little more favourable. Everton have tricky games still to play - their final three home fixtures are Newcastle United, Manchester City and Bournemouth - but I feel Sean Dyche could be a decisive factor in keeping them up, even if it is on goal difference.

Leeds are two points better off right now but they are in freefall. They’ve kept just one clean sheet in 2023 and their last two home fixtures have an aggregate scoreline of 11-2. There are seven games remaining and six of their opponents still have something to play for.
