Next Crystal Palace Manager Odds: Roy Hodgson to stay on at Selhurst Park?

Next Crystal Palace Manager Odds: Roy Hodgson to stay on at Selhurst Park?

We take a look at the latest next Crystal Palace manager odds, with Roy Hodgson the favourite to take permanent charge for the 2023/24 season.

After sacking Patrick Vieira in March earlier this year amidst an awful run of not winning a game in 2023, the Crystal Palace board went back to their old manager Roy Hodgson.

Many fans and pundits alike thought this was a backwards move, believing that the 75-year-old was not the right man to take them forward.

Despite this, Hodgson helped the club to 18 points from a possible 30 to keep them comfortably away from the drop zone, finishing in 11th place.

This has definitely increased the chances of him taking charge for another year, but nothing has been confirmed by Hodgson or the club since the season finished a few weeks ago.

Who are the favourites for the Crystal Palace manager job?

Roy Hodgson

At a best price of 6/5, Hodgson is the favourite to takeover permanently following his successful return to the club.

Having already worked at Palace in a permanent capacity from 2017 to 2021, Palace clearly know Hodgson well, as well as Hodgson knowing the club.

Whether Hodgson would want to commit to a longer term deal remains to be seen. The Eagles will have to appoint another manager at some point, and it might make sense to do so now rather than wait until the end of next season.

Graham Potter

The former Brighton and Chelsea manager is a best price of 4/1 to take the job, but can be found as short as 2/1 with one bookmaker. While Potter was clearly unsuccessful at Chelsea, leading to his sacking, his success at Brighton cannot be understated.

He established Brighton into a comfortable top tier side, and their participation in the Europa League next season is a testament to the foundations he had set prior to Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival.

Crystal Palace have been in the Premier League since they were first promoted in 2013, and their form under Vieira was the first time they were at real risk of relegation.

They have not finished in the top half since 2015, where they finished 10th, but Potter might be a long term play to help them achieve that as many of the problems at Chelsea were by no means helped by the chaotic nature of the club in Todd Boehly’s first season as owner.

Brendan Rodgers

Another manager who was sacked during the 2022/23 season, Brendan Rodgers is a best price of 6/1 to become the next Crystal Palace manager. As of right now, he is a best price of 1/5 to take the Celtic job, so a return to Scotland could well be on the cards.

However, after struggling with Leicester this season, which led to the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship, Palace possibly represent a bigger risk for Rodgers than Celtic - something which he might not want to contemplate as he looks to rebuild his reputation after a difficult end to his time at Leicester, where he won the FA Cup in 2021.

Paulo Fonseca

One name that might not be familiar with English football fans is the current Lille manager, Paulo Fonseca. Over the last few years, he has been linked with Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa. Lille narrowly missed out on the Europa League by a point to Rennes, but this is still an improvement from their 10th place finish last season in 2021/22.

A price of 17/2 might suggest he is a long shot for the position, but his time managing in Europe – including with Porto, Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma and Lille - speaks for itself in terms of the quality of those sides. Whether or not he would be a good option at Palace remains to be seen.

Paddy McCarthy

At 11/1, current assistant manager Paddy McCarthy is another longshot for the permanent position. He took charge as a caretaker manager in their 4-1 defeat at Arsenal last season in between the transition from Patrick Vieira to Roy Hodgson.

McCarthy made 134 league appearances in his eight years at Selhurst Park, despite consistent injury problems. He has been part of the academy set up as an under-18s coach, and then was thrusted into the spotlight for his one game against Arsenal last season.

With another manager still not confirmed, it might be the case that the club consider McCarthy for a promotion within, however that would be a big risk given his inexperience in a top job.
