Who is the favourite to become the new manager at Sheffield Wednesday?

Carlos Carvalhal

Carlos Carvalhal is the favourite (5/4) to return for a second spell as Sheffield Wednesday manager following the shock exit of promotion-winning Moore.

The Portuguese 57-year-old, who failed to save Swansea from Premier League relegation in 2018, led the Owls between 2015 and 2017, twice reaching the Championship play-offs. He left Spanish side Celta Vigo this month having guided them to safety after a 2-1 final-day victory over Barcelona.

Bruno Lage

Bruno Lage (6/1 to join Wednesday) was given the boot at Molineux having collected just six points from the first eight matches of last season’s Premier League, scoring just three times.

It’s easy to forget, however, that Wolves fared much better in the previous season, flirting with European football for much of it before finishing in 10th place after failing to win any of their last seven matches.

Lage, the closest rival to Carvalhal in the next Sheffield Wednesday manager odds market at the time of writing, has been out of work since leaving Wolves last October.

Nathan Jones

Nathan Jones’ (12/1) tumultuous time at St. Mary’s lasted just three months before he was sacked by Southampton with the club bottom of the Premier League – a position the Saints never recovered from under subsequent manager Ruben Selles.

Jones registered just one win in eight league matches against Everton. He also angered the Saints' fanbase following a 3-0 defeat to Brentford with a strange outburst in which he said that he has “compromised certain principles because of personnel and the way that people want to play”.

Gary O’Neil

The other surprise sacking of the last few days came at Bournemouth, where Gary O’Neil was relieved of his duties and quickly replaced with former Leeds manager target Andoni Iraloa.

O'Neil was in charge for 37 matches last season, initially on an interim basis before being formally appointed to his first head coaching role in November.

A return of 10 wins and six draws was enough to maintain the Cherries' position in the top flight, effectively securing survival with four matches remaining.

Is O'Neil (14/1) about to make a rapid return to management at Hillsborough?
