Another international break is upon us and England are in good shape with next year’s European Championships fast approaching. However, there has been much speculation that this will be Gareth Southgate’s last major tournament.
Southgate has come closer than any other manager to ending the long wait for a trophy but Euro 2024 could be his final chance to get the team over the line.
We look at the top five candidates in the latest next England manager odds market and assess the qualities each of them could bring to the role.

Who is the favourite to replace Southgate as England manager?
Graham Potter – 8/1
Graham Potter is the favourite for the England job at the time of writing (8/1 on Sky Bet). This is partly because he is currently out of a job and there would be no need to negotiate terms to prise him away from a club. The former Brighton manager has the tactical nous to do well as the England boss but other options are likely to be explored too.
Potter was one of the most highly regarded Premier League coaches before his ill-fated stint at Chelsea. His Brighton team earned many plaudits for how they played but his inability to get a tune out of the Chelsea squad raises some questions.

Lee Carsley – 9/1
Lee Carsley is the one on this list with the least experience at senior level. His career comprises of interim and caretaker roles with the likes of Coventry, Brentford and Birmingham. However, he has worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and led England to the U21 European Championship this year.
Like Potter, Carsley would be a cost-effective option for the FA. He has already worked with the country’s net generation of talent and he could be the man to ensure the England senior team end their long trophy drought.
Eddie Howe – 9/1
Eddie Howe’s stock continues to rise as his Newcastle side goes from strength to strength. He has overseen remarkable improvement since taking charge at the club. The Magpies secured a place in the Champions League last season and their recent win over PSG showed that Howe can compete with the biggest names in management.
Any deal to take away from Newcastle would be costly. The backing from Saudi Arabia makes Newcastle one of the most exciting prospects in world football and Howe will have aspirations of lifting silverware on Tyneside.
Pep Guardiola – 10/1
Pep Guardiola would be at the top of any managerial shortlist. The Catalan coach has proven his credentials over a very long period and his impact on the game cannot be overstated. He has called Manchester City his home over the last seven years and this has buoyed the FA’s hopes of obtaining the world’s most sought-after coach if Southgate’s tenure does end next year.
Stories surfaced at the start of last month declaring the Manchester City boss as a target. Pep Guardiola has previously talked about his desire to coach an international team and he would have a wealth of talent at his disposal should he take over England. The Three Lions have a number of technically gifted footballers that would thrive under Pep.
Steve Cooper – 11/1
Steve Cooper is perhaps a surprise inclusion on this list but he is the fifth favourite in the betting after Nottingham Forest’s strong start to the Premier League campaign. Cooper impressed at Swansea before moving to Forest in 2021. He has guided them to promotion and successfully kept them in the Premier League last season.
Cooper is an astute tactician and has prior experience within the England set-up. He has managed the under-16s and 17s, coaching the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho as his side were beaten in the 2017 European U17 Championship.
