The Africa Cup Of Nations is a biennial tournament comprising of the top 24 African nations. This year it will be hosted in Ivory Coast for the second time, with the first time being in 1984.
Traditionally, this tournament takes place during summer in Europe, where a large majority of African players play, to reduce scheduling conflicts with European club teams and competitions.
However, it was postponed due to adverse summer weather conditions in Ivory Coast, meaning it will now take place from January to February 2024.
Some of the biggest African players who will be travelling to Ivory Coast from the Premier League include the likes of Mohamed Salah, Andre Onana, Mohammed Kudus, Yves Bissouma, Nicolas Jackson and Alex Iwobi amongst others. Nottingham Forest have the most African representatives playing in the tournament, with six of their players travelling to Ivory Coast.
This is the latest major tournament for the likes of Cameroon, Senegal, Ghana, Morocco and Tunisia, who all participated in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Morocco reached the semi-finals of that tournament, the furthest an African nation had gone in a World Cup. Senegal reached the knockouts as well before being knocked out by England. The other three teams went out at the group stage.
Senegal, led by the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy, lifted the last AFCON tournament back in February 2022 after beating Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the final in Cameroon.
When does AFCON start?
AFCON starts on Saturday the 13th of January, as hosts Ivory Coast play Guinea-Bissau in the opening game of the tournament.

Who are favourites to win AFCON?
After winning the 2021 edition, Senegal are favourites to retain their trophy, at a best price of 6/1 generally. They play Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia in Group C, meaning they will play Guinea in the group stage yet again.
Cameroon reached the semi-finals last time round as hosts before being knocked out by finalists Egypt on penalties, so that would naturally be Senegal’s toughest game on paper.
