Following a shock senior squad call up, Kobbie Mainoo has been given a 58% chance of heading to Germany with Southgate's England this summer.
England travels to Germany this summer hoping to go one better than their painful loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on penalties.
England are favourites to win Euro 2024 at a best price of 7/2 (implied chance of 22%) at various bookmakers.
Their competition kicks off on June 16th when they take on Serbia at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. They also face Denmark and Slovenia in the group stages.
Responsibility falls on Gareth Southgate who has the difficult job of picking just 23 players from the vast list of deserving candidates competing for a spot on England’s Euro 2024 squad.
With the upcoming friendlies, perhaps we will get an insight into who the England manager is considering.
Southgate originally left 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo out of the senior squad for these fixtures, preferring to let him join the under-21 squad for the first time before making the jump to the top level of international football.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Mainoo has been promoted to the senior team after Southgate decided to expand his squad from 25 to 26 players for the upcoming friendlies. He will join the rest of the squad who reported to training on Tuesday at St George’s Park.
The young midfielder demonstrated he can perform under pressure this past weekend when Man United dramatically defeated Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup quarter final. He featured for 80 of the 120 minutes and looked assured as he went head-to-head with the likes of Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez.
There is a lot of optimism that he can go one better and make it to the England Euro 2024 squad before the deadline for squad submission on June 7th. He can be found as short as 8/11 to do this (an implied chance of 58%) at William Hill, Paddy Power, and Sky Bet.
