Championship Fixtures: Who will be top after game week 1?

The bookmakers are predicting a lot of close matches in the first game week with only three sides odds on (over a 50% implied chance) to win their opening game of the season.

Leeds

Perhaps the most obvious of those sides are Leeds who have been given a 2/5 (71% implied chance) of beating Portsmouth on Saturday.

Despite accumulating 90 points last season, Farke's men fell short of securing promotion, marking the first time in six Championship seasons that such a tally wasn't enough for automatic promotion.

Leeds had the lowest xGA (expected goals against) in the Championship last season with an average of 0.82 per game. They also had one of the most formidable attacks, scoring an average of 1.73 goals per game.

They face a newly promoted Portsmouth side at home this Saturday and although they dominated League One last year, this might be an early reality check for them.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough, who are fourth favourite to be promoted, have been given a 10/11 (52% implied chance) of beating Swansea this weekend.

Under Michael Carrick they made the playoffs in his first season in charge and just narrowly missed out last season having lost some key players.

They finished last season in good form and have managed to keep their key players this window, so there is a lot of optmisim in their camp.

On the other hand, the side they face on Saturday, Swansea, have lost 15 players and brought in just four and this new look side might need more time to settle.

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday are 17/20 (54% implied chance) to beat wayne Rooney's Plymouth on Sunday.

Both teams narrowly escaped relegation last season and are eager to start this campaign on the right foot. The Owls are being backed to do so, especially against a Plymouth side that struggled on the road, winning just three of their 23 away matches in the league last year.
