Next England Manager Odds: Five Reasons Why Carsley Is the Easy Way Out

Is Lee Carsley England's best option after last night's defeat against Greece, or is he the easy way out for the FA?

Lee Carsley's tenure as England manager started brightly, with two convincing victories against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in the Nations League.

His appointment as interim boss came after Gareth Southgate's impressive eight-year reign, during which Southgate guided the team to two European Championship finals, raising the bar for his successor.

Yet, despite Carsley's early success and an exciting brand of football that contrasts with Southgate's pragmatic style, last night's dismal defeat against Greece brings into view FIVE key reasons why the Football Association reason to pause before handing him the job full-time.

Lee Carsley remains the favourite to be the next permanent England manager despite last night's defeat but has drifted to a best price of 7/4 on bet365.

Let's assess why he might be the safe option for the FA and potentially not the best option.

Five Reasons Why Carsley Is the Easy Way Out

1. Limited Experience at the Top Level

While Carsley has had notable success with England's youth teams, including winning the European Under-21 Championship, his transition to the senior role raises legitimate concerns.

His managerial career is primarily rooted in the Championship and includes a series of caretaker roles at the likes of Coventry (2012/13), Brentford (2015/16) and Birmingham (2017/18).

The pressures of international management, especially for a team that has yet to lift a major trophy in 60 years, may be beyond his current experience.

In a climate where the expectation is to win, are the FA taking such by considering someone who has yet to prove himself at the highest level because of his achievements at the youth level?

2. Short-Term Focus Over Long-Term Vision

Carsley's initital success might lure the FA into a short-term mindset, favouring immediate results over a sustainable long-term strategy.

While he delivered promising results against Ireland and Finland, and played some attractive attacking football, those sides are not strong enough to be a real test of Carsley's ability.

As we saw last night at Wembley, using those first two results to justify hiring the Englishman over other candidates could prove a costly mistake in the long-term.

3. Avoiding Difficult Decisions

Appointing Carsley may allow the FA to sidestep tougher decisions surrounding more experienced candidates who may bring stronger reputations and results.

Carsley is certainly a “safe pair of hands” and is used to the England set up but that is not to say the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Eddie Howe or Graham Potter with their vast experience and achievements couldn't execute England's vision more effectively despite being a bigger risk.

4. Familiarity Breeds Complacency

Appointing Carsley means sticking with someone already integrated into the England setup as they did with Southgate when he was appointed in 2016.

This can lead to a reluctance to innovate or adapt strategies, risking stagnation in a competitive international landscape.

Going for someone like Potter who could bring an attractive brand of attacking football and a fresh perspective on the side could be just what England need to get over the line and lift a trophy.

5. His Tactical Approach

Carsley’s attacking philosophy and willingness to take risks are commendable but may not be sustainable against higher-calibre opposition.

While the victories against Ireland and Finland showcased an exciting brand of football, they were also against teams of lesser quality.

As the competition ramps up, the question arises: can Carsley maintain this approach against stronger teams or will he revert to the more conservative tactics many fans and pundits criticised Southgate for?

Since the final whistle at Wembley, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has emerged as the most popular pick among bettors on oddschecker.

Despite being listed as the fourth favorite with odds of 12/1, Howe has attracted 28% of all bets placed in the market.

Close behind Howe is Thomas Tuchel, who has garnered 23% of the bet share. One bookmaker lists Tuchel as the 6/4 favourite, although one bookmaker has him priced 5/2, showing a split in opinion across the market.

Below is a snapshot of the current leading candidates for the England job based on oddschecker’s latest betting data:

Next Permanent England Manager Average Odds % of bets since defeat to Greece
Lee Carsley 5/4 8%
Thomas Tuchel 6/4 24%
Pep Guardiola 8/1 16%
Eddie Howe 12/1 28%
Graham Potter 12/1 18%

Leon Blackman from oddschecker said: “Following the defeat to Greece last night, Lee Carsley’s chances of becoming permanent England manager have taken a hit with the bookies.

"On oddschecker, we’ve seen his odds drift from 1/4 to 5/4, a sharp decline in confidence from bookies and bettors alike.

"Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has emerged as the popular pick with our bettors, the 28% of bets he’s picked up since the defeat is the most of any managers priced in the market.”
