Two former Plymouth managers are favourite to replace Rooney and return to Home Park.
Plymouth Argyle find themselves in a familiar position after parting ways with Wayne Rooney after a dismal nine-game winless streak left them rooted to the bottom of the Championship.
Argyle now face the daunting task of appointing their third manager in eight months to salvage their season.
Rooney’s brief tenure saw just four league wins and a division-worst defensive record. They’ve scored the joint-lowest number of goals in the Championship and conceded more than any other team across England’s top four leagues.
First-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will be in charge for Plymouth's New Year's Day clash against Bristol City as they search for a replacement.

Who is the favourite to be the next Plymouth Manager?
Steven Schumacher, currently 4/1 favourite (With Bet Victor) to return as Plymouth Argyle manager, is a name well-known to The Pilgrims.
Schumacher replaced Ryan Lowe at Home Park and guided Plymouth to the League One title in the 2022/23 campaign before departing to Stoke City in December 2023.
This move didn't quite work out for Schumacher, as he was sacked by the Potters in September while they sat 13th in the Championship.
With Plymouth battling relegation, Schumacher's proven track record with the club make him a compelling candidate to take charge.
Another former Plymouth manager is the second favorite to become their next manager—the man that Schumacher replaced—Ryan Lowe, who is a 6/1 favorite with the same bookmakers
He is available after leaving Preston North End by mutual consent in August.
Lowe led the Pilgrims to promotion to the Championship during the 2019/20 season, though he couldn’t prevent their immediate relegation. He departed to Deepdale in December 2021.
Neil Harris, third favourite at 10/1 for the Plymouth Argyle job, brings a wealth of Championship experience having managed Millwall for two seperate terms and Cardiff City for another.
