Next Man Utd Manager Odds: Eddie Howe Favourite to Replace Carrick

Eddie Howe is the 8/11 favourite to be the next Manchester United manager, with Michael Carrick's future under review after Sunday's defeat to Bournemouth.

Michael Carrick took training at Carrington this morning, but his time as Manchester United head coach looks to be running out. Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth left United 16th with seven points from eight Premier League games. It is their worst return at this stage of a season since 1986-87. They are also without a win in eight games in all competitions.

United's leadership have been discussing Carrick's future since the weekend, and it has been reported that he will only be replaced once a successor is lined up. The betting for the next Man Utd manager has moved quickly, with one name now well clear of the rest.

Who's Favourite to Be the Next Man Utd Manager?

Eddie Howe is the favourite at a best price of 8/11, which gives him an implied chance of around 58%. Most bookmakers have him shorter still, between 4/6 and 4/7. Oddschecker's bet history shows how sharp the move has been. Howe was 2/1 a fortnight ago and drifted to 9/4 on 18 October. He was then slashed into odds-on straight after the Bournemouth defeat.

Howe stepped down at Newcastle in July, so he is available, and he is reported to be open to the job. Director of football Jason Wilcox is said to favour him. Any deal would mean paying Newcastle compensation.

Julian Nagelsmann is second favourite at 5/2, about 29%. He has been as long as 13/2 this month, and William Hill went as short as 7/4 this morning. He has been out of work since leaving the Germany job after the World Cup and is reported to have support within United's recruitment team.

Antonio Conte is third favourite at 5/1, about 17%. He is also out of work and has also been linked with Juventus. Unai Emery has been cut from 20/1 to 9/1 since last Friday, although his Aston Villa contract runs to 2029.

Michael Carrick Sack Latest and Man Utd Fixtures

Carrick was made permanent head coach in May after winning 11 of his 16 games as interim boss and steering United into the Champions League. This season has gone wrong quickly. A 4-1 defeat at Como in Europe was followed by Bruno Fernandes publicly questioning the tactics and then being left as an unused substitute against Bournemouth.

Carrick has insisted he is "carrying on as normal" and loves the club. Bookmakers suspended their Carrick sack markets after Sunday's game.

United's next games are away at Chelsea on Saturday at 12:30 GMT, then at home to Roma in the Champions League on 3 November. That gives the club a natural point to make a change before the Chelsea game if a deal for Howe can be done.
