Next Man Utd Manager Odds: Eddie Howe Favourite After Chelsea Loss

Eddie Howe is the 4/6 favourite to be the next Man Utd manager after Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea left Michael Carrick under more pressure.

Michael Carrick's future at Manchester United looks shakier than ever after a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead early in the second half. Lisandro Martínez was then sent off for a second booking, and Cole Palmer scored the resulting penalty. United have now gone nine games without a win in all competitions, their longest run since 1988.

The result leaves United 16th on seven points after nine games, a point above the bottom three. Only a few months after he was given the job permanently, Carrick is the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave, and the next permanent Man Utd manager market has moved accordingly.

Who Is the Favourite to Be the Next Man Utd Manager?

Eddie Howe is the odds-on favourite to be the next Man Utd manager at 4/6, which gives him an implied chance of 60%. William Hill closed at 4/5 last night and has cut him to 4/7 today. Howe has been out of work since leaving Newcastle in the summer, so United would not have to negotiate with another club. He is reported to be the preferred choice of director of football Jason Wilcox, and he is said to be willing to consider the role seriously.

Julian Nagelsmann is second favourite at 5/2 (about 29%). The former Germany boss is also available after leaving the national job following the World Cup. He is reported to be favoured by United's head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, which points to a split within the club over who should succeed Carrick. Antonio Conte is third favourite at 5/1 (about 17%). He is out of work since leaving Napoli, and has said there are no advanced negotiations but that he would listen if a concrete opportunity came up.

Unai Emery, at 17/2, is the shortest-priced candidate who is currently in a job, so United would have to pay Aston Villa compensation to appoint him.

Michael Carrick Sack Race Odds

Carrick is 1/5 to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post, an implied chance of about 83%. Betfair and Sky Bet had him at 17/20 shortly before kick-off. Pierre Sage is second in the betting at 4/1.

The pressure on Carrick has been building for a week. After the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, United's leadership held a long call on Monday and decided to keep him for the Chelsea game. Reports suggest that was partly because there was no agreement on a successor. Some reports suggest he could be given the next two games as well.

When Will Man Utd Appoint a New Manager?

United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday and Aston Villa in the Premier League next Sunday. Then comes the November international break, which several reports suggest is the most likely time for any change. With Howe, Nagelsmann and Conte all out of work, United would not need to wait for another club to release its manager before making an appointment.
