Next Manager to Be Sacked Odds: Carrick 1/5 After Chelsea Defeat

Michael Carrick is the 1/5 favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked after Manchester United's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Michael Carrick has become the clear favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked. Manchester United lost 2-0 at Chelsea, their ninth game in a row without a win, and only five months after Carrick was given the job permanently.

United's board decided to keep him after last weekend's 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, reportedly because there was no agreement on a successor. Today's loss, in which Lisandro Martínez was sent off and Chelsea scored twice in the second half, leaves United 16th, a point above the bottom three. The sack race market now treats Carrick's exit as a question of when, not if.

Who Is the Favourite to Be the Next Premier League Manager Sacked?

Carrick is the favourite to be the next Premier League manager sacked at 1/5, an implied chance of about 83%. He was a 4/6 shot at Betfair, Sky Bet and Paddy Power at last night's close. He drifted to 17/20 around kick-off, as United started well, and was then cut to 1/5 as the game turned against them. Since the opening day, United have won one of nine league games, and they're also out of the Carabao Cup and have lost both their Champions League away games.

Reports suggest Carrick could get one or two more games. United host Roma on Tuesday and Aston Villa next Sunday before the November international break, which is widely seen as the most likely time for a change. Eddie Howe is the 4/6 favourite to replace him and Julian Nagelsmann is 5/2 in the next Man Utd manager betting. Both are out of work, so United wouldn't need to wait for another club before making a change.

Michael Carrick Sack Odds: Why the Pressure Has Built

Carrick took interim charge in January and earned the job permanently after United finished third last season. This season has gone wrong quickly. The defeats by Bournemouth at home and Como in Europe were especially damaging, and the long Monday conference call between the owners and executives showed that his position is already being discussed at the top of the club.

Reports of a split over his replacement could buy him time, but on these prices the market doesn't expect it to save him.

Pierre Sage Sack Odds

Pierre Sage is second favourite at 4/1, about 20%. His Crystal Palace side have the worst defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded 19 goals in their first eight games. Reports say chairman Steve Parish has told him today's trip to Tottenham is crucial to his future. That makes Sage the one name who could overtake Carrick at short notice.
