Portugal World Cup and Euro Odds After Ronaldo Retirement

Portugal World Cup and Euro Odds After Ronaldo Retirement

Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international football, but Portugal's World Cup 2030 and Euro 2028 odds have not moved.

Cristiano Ronaldo's international career is over. On Thursday morning he announced in an Instagram video that he won't play for Portugal again. He leaves after 23 years as the most-capped and highest-scoring player in men's international football, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.

Portugal are third favourite to win the 2030 World Cup, which they co-host, and they're in the leading group for Euro 2028. The bookmakers had already priced them as a team built on its midfield rather than its 41-year-old captain.

Have Portugal's World Cup Odds Changed After Ronaldo's Retirement?

Not yet. Portugal are 7/1 for the World Cup with every firm pricing the market, about a 12.5% chance. Oddschecker bet history shows them at 7/1 since bet365 opened the market on 20 July.

It's the same story for Euro 2028. Portugal are 8/1 at best and 7/1 with most firms, roughly an 11% chance. The only recent movement has been Spreadex and Sporting Index switching between 7/1 and 15/2.

The market has a good reason to stay put. Portugal haven't needed Ronaldo lately. Under Jorge Jesus, who was appointed in July on a four-year deal running to the 2030 World Cup, they've won all four Nations League games and already reached the March quarter-finals. One of those wins was a 4-2 victory in Denmark, played after Ronaldo left the squad.

Who Is the Favourite to Win the 2030 World Cup?

Spain are 9/2 favourites, about an 18% chance. They won the 2026 World Cup, knocking Portugal out 1-0 in the last 16 along the way, and they'll be co-hosts in 2030. France are 6/1, ahead of Portugal at 7/1, with England and Brazil both 8/1.

As co-hosts with Spain and Morocco, Portugal have already qualified. Six group games are being played in South America to mark the tournament's centenary, and the final is on 21 July 2030.

Who Is the Favourite to Win Euro 2028?

Spain are favourites again at 4/1, but France and England are close behind at 9/2, so none of them stands out. Portugal are fourth favourite at 8/1, just ahead of Germany at 9/1.

Euro 2028 runs from 9 June to 9 July in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, with the final at Wembley. Portugal won the Euros in 2016. They'll go into the qualifying draw in Belfast on 6 December, and qualifiers run from March to November 2027.

How Did Ronaldo's Portugal Career End?

His last cap came in the 1-0 Nations League win over Wales in Lisbon on 24 September. He was an unused substitute in Norway three days later. He then left the squad in Copenhagen and was given a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation.

In October he said he wanted to keep playing for Portugal. He's now ended his international career the day before Jesus names his squad for the November games against Denmark and Wales. Bruno Fernandes captained the side while Ronaldo was away and is the obvious choice to take over.
