Tiger Woods makes disastrous start to the Dubai Desert Classic

Tiger Woods shot a five-over 77 in the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic, with Sergio Garcia leading the field.

Tiger Woods' comeback in 2017 has not got off the ground yet and he has started this tournament in much the same way as the Farmers Insurance tournament last week.

Woods failed to make the cut last week and he could be going the same way in Dubai. Starting from the 10th, he bogeyed the par five after finding himself in a bunker and followed that up with another dropped shot by three-putting on the 12th green.

The former world number one failed to record a single birdie in an opening round of 77, two shots worse than his previous highest score at this event.

That left the now world number 666 with only three players below him on the leaderboard and 12 shots off clubhouse leader Sergio Garcia, who carded a 65 containing six birdies and an eagle. Woods' first round was so bad that his odds have drifted from 50/1 before teeing-off to 1000/1 once he was safely in the clubhouse.

Woods has an impressive record in Dubai, never finishing outside the top five in his first five appearances and lifted the trophy in 2006 and 2008. He faces a battle to avoid missing consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour this year though and will have to pick his game up significantly to do so.
