Irish Open: Three times more bets on Lagergren than McIlroy

Irish Open: Three times more bets on Lagergren than McIlroy

The young Swede is the most popular bet for the event despite bookies giving him a 150/1 chance of winning.

Rory McIlroy hosts his third Irish Open this week and the Northern Irishman will be looking to successfully defend the tournament he won last year. He goes in to the event as the 7/1 favourite but it is further down the market that Oddschecker users are looking for a bet.

This week the most bets have been on Joakim Lagergren. One firm had him priced at 250/1 yesterday but have now cut him to 100/1. The young Swede has accounted for 10.7% of bets on the market this week and if you fancy getting involved then 150/1 is currently the best price out there.

When you look at the Swede’s recent finishes it is not immediately clear as to why he has been such a popular bet, but he has played better recently than his form suggests. He went into the last day of the BMW International Open one shot off the lead two weeks ago but his final round let him down. He also got his one win on the Challenge Tour in Northern Ireland in 2014 so has good memories of playing in the country.

Shane Lowry has seen the next most bets with 6.6% and is 33/1 whilst Thorbjorg Olesen is third most backed, also at 33/1, with 4.4% of bets. You have to wait until you get to 4th on the list to see McIlroy, who has just 3.5% of bets to his name.
