Ian Poulter could prove problematic for bookies with Masters victory

If the much-loved Englishman finally wins a Green Jacket he could cause havoc with the bookies.

Englishman Ian Poulter could cost bookies across the country a pretty penny, if he’s able to go the whole way and win the US Masters.

Despite the presumption that the likes of Tiger Woods and Jordan Speith would be the chink in the armour for bookmakers – it’s Hertfordshire-born Poulter that could spell trouble on the trading floor.

Poulter opened as large as 70/1 with some bookies when he was first added to the market, but has been steadily backed into 45/1.

Claiming himself that there’s “still life in the old dog”, Poulter could provide a howler for the bookies – but it’s yet to be seen whether his bark is worse than his bite.

Head of Trading at Sky Bet, Paul Lowery, said: "After his dramatic backdoor entry into the Masters it has been a steady flow of support for Poulter.

After opening at 50/1 the Englishman has been backed to 45/1 and I wouldn't be surprised if he started the tournament even shorter.

“Given our 10 place offer we would be looking at some pretty heavy losses if Poulter is joined at the top of the leader board by Rose, McIlroy and Woods in the race for the green jacket."

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “Poulter's return to form was not totally out of the blue, as he played much of the best golf in the early stages of the WGC World Match-Play the week before.

“He will be absolutely desperate to play himself into Ryder Cup contention, and a green jacket would prove just the ticket for ‘Poults’, albeit a stinger for the bookies.”
