Open Championship Odds: How to Bet on the Favourites at The Open 2023

Open Championship Odds: How to Bet on the Favourites at The Open 2023

With the Championship starting on Thursday in Liverpool, we look through the odds for the 2023 Open and break down how to bet.

The 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake is right around the corner, and we are here to tell you all about the final golf major of the season.

This is the last chance for the best players in the world to battle it out for a major championship in 2023, and the Claret Jug is one prize every player dreams of winning.

Cam Smith comes into the event as defending champion and will be keen to prove his move to LIV has had no adverse effects on his game, but will he be able to defend his title? Padraig Harrington was the last person to win back-to-back Open Championships in 2008, so the odds are against an a repeat from the Aussie here, even if he did win his last LIV event at the Centurion Club.

Let’s take a look at the latest Open Championship odds, and determine who the frontrunners are for the Open 2023, and who we should expect to compete for the final major of the year.

The Open Odds: Who is the Favourite?

It will be no surprise to see the top of the odds board littered with the top three in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Looking for his first major win since 2014 is Rory McIlroy, who won the Claret Jug at this very course nine years ago. He will be looking to finally break that spell without a major, by repeating at the same course.

Scottie Scheffler has been on a tear this season, winning twice, and he will be looking to add a third win of the season, and his second major championship.

Since winning the Masters in April, Jon Rahm hasn’t enjoyed the success he was having earlier in the season, and after skipping the Scottish Open, he will look to come into this event fresh and ready to contend for his first Claret Jug, and third major title.

Open Championship Betting Odds

Rory McIlroy (7/1) is the marginal favourite over Scottie Scheffler (17/2) this week, with his course form and general Open Championship form considered a plus over the current World No.1.

McIlroy and Scheffler are the only two golfers coming into the week as single-digit chances, with Jon Rahm next up in the betting at 12/1.

Cam Smith (18/1), Brooks Koepka (22/1) and Viktor Hovland (22/1) complete the list of golfers at 22/1 and shorter.

Let’s look at the best and worst odds for each of these six frontrunners in the market.

Scottie Scheffler Open Championship Odds

Scottie Scheffler is next up in the Open Championship odds board, and is rightly one of the Open 2023 favourites.

Scheffler does not have the same wealth of experience that McIlroy does in this major championship, but in limited starts he has already impressed. Let’s look at the ways you can bet on the American.

  • Wins: 0
  • Top 5s: 0
  • Top 10s: 1 (T8 in 2021 is his best finish)
  • Made Cuts: 2
  • Missed Cuts: 0

Scheffler is 2/2 for made cuts at the Open Championship, finishing 8th and 21st in two starts, and has been inside the top five going into the final round on both occasions.

Jon Rahm Open Championship Odds

Jon Rahm sits in between Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler in terms of Open Championship experience, and of the top three in the world rankings, he has the biggest Open Championship odds.

The Spaniard will certainly feel like he has served his apprenticeship at this point, with top finishes in this event already and with two majors titles now to his name. Can he now pick up a second major of the year at Hoylake?

Let’s look at the best Jon Rahm bets you can place ahead of the 2023 Open Championship.

Jon Rahm Bets Best Odds Worst Price
Jon Rahm to win 12/1 10/1
Jon Rahm top 10 finish 7/5 5/4
Jon Rahm top 20 finish 4/6 4/7
Jon Rahm first round leader 25/1 22/1
Jon Rahm to make the cut 1/6 1/7
Jon Rahm to miss the cut 9/2 7/2

You will see a complete list of Jon Rahm Open Championship odds on the oddschecker grid, and you will then be able to decide exactly which markets you want to bet on him in, if you want to bet him at all. Let’s look at his previous Open Championship experience to better understand his relationship with this event.

Jon Rahm has played in six Open Championships. These are his results so far:

  • Wins: 0
  • Top 5s: 1 (T3 in 2021 is his best finish)
  • Top 10s: 1
  • Made Cuts: 5
  • Missed Cuts: 1

Rahm has been solid enough at the Open Championship and was amongst those with a good chance to win on Sunday in 2021. He has, however, only finished inside the top 10 once in this major so far, with a T11 in 2019 his next best finish. His compatriot, Sergio Garcia played well here in 2014, so maybe he can learn something from him ahead of this week's event.
