McIlroy comes into the event in great form, having finished eighth or better in seven of the last eight major tournaments (three times in the top three), with the only exception being his failure to make the cut at this year's US Masters.
Based off the practice sessions for Team Europe in Rome this week, McIlroy is predicted to play with Shane Lowry on the opening day, but it remains to be seen whether the duo will be used for one or both of the foursomes and fourballs formats.
