Two of Team USA’s biggest stars are battling for favouritism in the Olympic Golf.
The Olympic Golf gets underway tomorrow morning at Le Golf National, the scene of Europe's 17.5-10.5 of the USA in the 2018 Ryder Cup.
The importance of this event among the elite golfers was questioned eight years ago but it has now certainly found its place in the calendar for the very best.
The field is very akin to another major just two weeks after Xander Schauffele claimed his second major of the year in the Open Championship at Troon.
Is Schauffele the favourite to retain the Olympic title he won in Tokyo?
Who is favourite to win the Olympic Golf?
World number one Scottie Scheffler is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the event at a best price of 4/1 on bet365 (shortest price 10/3).
That’s despite the scintillating form shown in Scotland by Xander Schauffele, who edges Rory McIlroy as the second favourite with best odds of 13/2.
McIlroy is one of only two others with a best price of 10/1 or shorter. The Northern Irishman is 17/2, while last week’s LIV Golf winner Jon Rahm is 10/1 (both AK Bets).
Olympic Golf Odds
| Player | Best Odds | Implied Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Scottie Scheffler | 4/1 | 20% |
| Xander Schauffele | 13/2 | 13% |
| Rory McIlroy | 17/2 | 11% |
| Jon Rahm | 10/1 | 9% |
| Collin Morikawa | 11/1 | 8% |
Olympic Golf Winners
USA’s Xander Schauffele is the reigning Olympic champion having won gold in Tokyo by a single stroke from Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini (Pan Cheng-tsung claimed bronze for the Chinese Taipei).
The other gold medal winner from 2016 was Great Britain’s Justin Rose, who edged Sweden’s silver medallist Henrik Stenson by two strokes. USA’s Matt Kuchar won bronze.
