Many Clouds passes away

2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds has sadly collapsed and passed away following thrilling win in Cotswold Chase.

Many Clouds produced a stunning finish to narrowly beat Thistlecrack to the post at Cheltenham before collapsing. He was immediately attended to by veterinary staff but sadly could not be saved.

It was the first time King George VI Chase winner Thistlecrack had been beaten over fences as Many Clouds fought back from the last fence to win after a photo-finish.

Many Clouds famously won the 2015 Grand National, ridden by Leighton Aspell, and trainer Oliver Sherwood admitted he died doing what he loved.

"I've been in the game 33 years training and it's the best, but worst, scenario. He loved jumping and loved racing. He's been the horse of a lifetime. I always said he'd die for you and he died for us doing what he loved."

"He will go through a brick wall for you and he has done that today and I want to enjoy the good days. Equine or human, it happens to us all," added Sherwood speaking to ITV4 presenter Ed Chamberlin.

Thistlecrack made a few mistakes in the race but approached the last in the lead before Many Clouds rallied to catch the Gold Cup favourite. Trainer Colin Tizzard conceded Many Clouds' victory was thoroughly deserved.

"We were just beaten by the better horse on the day, two fantastic horses ran right to the line," said Tizzard.

He added: "They had a battle and it's just a tragic end to the race. This is what happens in our sport occasionally and you've got to face up to it."
