14/1 shot One For Arthur lands the 2017 Grand National for jockey Derek Fox and trainer Lucinda Russell.
One For Arthur made significant progress with two left to jump before landing level with leader Blaklion at the second to last fence. The Luncinda Russell trained 8yo then skipped over the last and fought off the challenge of Cause Of Causes to charge to the line and become only the second Scottish-trained winner of all time.
Jockey Derek Fox, who was injured early in March when he fell at Carlisle. was a doubt for the Aintree showpiece but the 25-year-old returned to action three days before securing this famous win. Trainer Lucinda Russell has become just the fourth woman to win the Grand National, after Jenny Pitman, Venetia Williams and Sue Smith, and a delighted Russell admitted it was 'out of this world' to have a horse like him.
Speaking to ITV Racing following the win, she said: "I am so delighted, what a day. We’ve got a fantastic team behind us. He is amazing, he has improved every time. We kept thinking barring accidents he will win the National, and he just has. It’s brilliant for Scotland, it’s for the whole team at the yard."
Favourite Blaklion, at 8/1, was being roared on by the Aintree crowd but could not follow One For Arthur and Cause of Causes after the last fence and slipped to fourth as Saint Are rallied late on to claim third at 25/1.
For racegoers relying on the bookies paying out on five and six places, Gas Line Boy provided a nice place return at 50/1 for punters while Vieux Lion Rouge finished sixth at 12/1. But for One For Arthur's owners Belinda McClung and Debs Thomson, nicknamed 'The Two Golf Widows', it was a day to remember.
