Michael Owen bullish about charity race chances despite needing to lose 24lbs

The former England striker has just 24 days to lose the weight ahead of the Prince’s Countryside Fund Charity Race

Michael Owen is not taking the easy option when it comes to trying to win his first competitive race ride experience. Now 37, the BT Sport pundit will be riding in the Princes Countryside Fund Charity Race at Ascot on Friday 24th November and he’s determined to not just make up the numbers.

Speaking to Oddschecker on Wednesday, Owen said: “I am in a fortunate position that I have two horses at the stables that I could ride in the race. One is on the safer side, but I plan to ride the more challenging horse as I think it gives me the best chance of winning, and this was never just about taking part.”

Owen has also embarked on a tough 24 day challenge in a bid to shed the 24lbs needed to make the weight for the race including early starts and riding out plenty of lots at Manor House stables which he co-owns with Andrew Black.

Ladbrokes are offering odds of 16/1 for the former Liverpool striker to hit the back of the net at Ascot.
