A complete upset in the Scottish National means the bookies were racking it in.
A victory for the bookies as Joe Farrell an unlikely winner of the Scottish Grand National. Less than 2% of all bets were placed on the photo finish winner, who went off at 33/1.
The nine-year-old, trained by Rebecca Curtis, came into the race on the back of a Grade 3 win at Newbury over 23f and was clearly in the mood to hold off Ballyoptic, who was well supported at 11-1.
With only 14 runs to his name, this lightly raced horse has a strong record with 4 wins and 3 seconds, and with only one run this year, came into the race very fresh. Despite this, the biggest bet placed on Joe Farrell was £15 – which goes to show how unlikely punters thought that he would end up winning it.
Vicente, who was looking for the hat-trick, wasn’t able to live up to his last two victories and wasn’t even able to place, despite running prominently throughout the race.
