Withhold destroyed the field to win the Northumberland Plate on Saturday afternoon.
WITHHOLD made all the running to win the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon and may now head to Australia in an attempt to win the Melbourne Cup.
Trainer Roger Charlton admitted after the race that Melbourne was a real option after Withhold’s runaway success, claiming that the Ebor at York may be too easy and with his rating potentially increasing to 109, he may well have enough to head to Australia and challenge.
Last night, Withhold was 33/1 to win the Melbourne Cup but after his victory today and interview with Charlton, his odds have been cut to as short as 14/1.
However, if you shop around, many major bookmakers still have 20/1, who are less convinced the horse will travel.
Oddschecker spokesman George Elek: “Withhold decided to hit the front from the off in today’s Northumberland Plate and wasn’t challenged at all.
There was so much quality within the race and the horse made light work, indicating he is capable of competing in the Melbourne Cup. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Roger Charlton clearly believes it is on the cards.”
