Altior set to go off the shortest Grade 1 price in six years

Altior set to go off the shortest Grade 1 price in six years

Only three have declared for the Clarence House chase and Altior should dominate.

It will be one of the smallest Grade 1 fields in recent memory as Altior has scared off the rest of the field to dominate the betting in the Clarence House Chase.

His starting SP is set to be around the 1/8 mark and if this is proved correct, it would be the shortest price for a horse in a Grade 1 since 2013.

Six years ago, jumps racing was being set alight by Hurricane Fly and Sprinter Sacre, who both went off at shorter odds than 1/8.

‘The Fly’ was a minuscule 1/16 in the Morgiana Hurdle and duly delivered, but only by a length and a quarter as he achieved his 17th Grade 1 success.

Sprinter Sacre will always be remembered for his comeback Queen Mother success in 2016, but in the Punchestown Champion Chase he was arguably in his pomp and delighted racegoers by winning at 1/9.

It’s no surprise to see 85% of total bets this week going on Altior, but unless you’re going very big, don’t expect a windfall if he gets home.

Oddschecker spokesperson George Elek: “Altior is certainly a horse worthy of this tag, but it is a shame that trainers seem to swerve taking on the superstar Chaser.

“Next season may provide some sterner tests for him though, with trainer Henderson hinting to Oddschecker that the King George route may well be on the cards.”
