Cheltenham Gold Cup: Where is the money going?

Cheltenham Gold Cup: Where is the money going?

We reveal the runners getting the most backing in the festival highlight.

All eyes on the showcase at 3.30pm as punters flood to the Cheltenham Gold Cup market.

The trio at the top of the market are battling it out for favouritism, but it’s CLAN DES OBEAUX who’s seen the most money from our users today. Currently priced at 5/1, Paul Nicholls’ star is hoping to add to his thoroughly impressive victory in the King George chase at Kempton. With 21% of bets today, he’s narrowly the punters’ choice.

Leading the market at this stage, PRESENTING PERCY is the second most backed with 18% of bets today. Having won at the last two festivals, including last year’s RSA Chase, Patrick G Kelly’s gelding is one of the most talked about horses this season. Question marks surround his Gold Cup preparation having not faced fences yet this term, but plenty believe the eight-year-old will prevail.

The defending champion of this race, NATIVE RIVER, has accrued 12% of bets on the market today. A 13/2 shot, the wet weather at Prestbury Park could well prove to be decisive this afternoon. With many bookmakers paying four places, punters will be hoping Dicky Johnson can at least guide his trusty charge into the mix.

Of those with slightly longer odds, the order of the market is roughly reflected in where the money is heading. Willie Mullins’ KEMBOY at 11/1 has had 10% of bets today, while BELLSHILL (12/1), THISTLECRACK (14/1) and AL BOUM PHOTO (14/1) sit almost neck-and-neck with around 6% of bets each.

For punters searching for a chunky each-way bet, it seems ANIBALE FLY is taking the most fancy at 28/1. With Barry Geraghty aboard and a cracking run to finish third in this last year, the JP McManus-owned gelding is proving an attractive prospect at a big price.
