Cross Counter backed to end Stradivarius seven-race win streak

The Melbourne Cup winner is more popular than Frankie Dettori’s mount over the last 24 hours

Cross Counter is being heavily backed to stop Stradivarius’ win streak in its tracks today at Glorious Goodwood, becoming the most backed horse in the last 24 hours.

The Charlie Appleby-trained entry has been the subject of a spate of money, accumulating 42% of all stakes in the featured race, compared to Stradivarius’ 36%.

In turn, that’s led to bookies cutting odds on the four-year-old, from 4/1 yesterday into 3/1 as of this morning.

That’s also resulted in a slight drift on Stradivarius, lengthening since the market opened from 4/6 into 8/11.

Elsewhere, Silvestre de Sousa’s ride Dee Ex Bee is third favourite at 7/1, followed by Wells Farhh Go (25/1) and Dashing Willoughby (25/1).

Southern France (28/1), South Pacific (33/1) and Harpo Marx (125/1) make up the rest of the runners and riders, with Raa Atoll deemed a non-runner.

Cross Counter only finished two lengths behind red-hot favourite Stradivarius in the Gold Cup, when the Goldophin horse finished fourth.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “Stradivarius got the better of the Godolphin gelding last time out over 2m 4f at Ascot but it looked as though the trip may have been a bit too far for Cross Counter.

"Punters know the step back to 2m today will suit Charlie Appleby’s horse but it will take a big run to topple John Gosden’s Group 1 winner."
