12/1 shot most backed to win Ayr Gold Cup

David O'Meara's hopeful has shortened from 33/1 in a few days.

The most backed horse in the Ayr Gold Cup market in the last 24 hours is Gulliver at 12/1.

Trainer David O’Meara confirmed the five-year-old would be lining up on Saturday and is likely to be alongside four other stablemates.

The York-based trainer is going after a second success in the race, having won with Louis the Pious back in 2014.

A strong showing at the Curragh last time out along with the trainer’s comments have prompted activity from punters. With 31% of bets in the last 24 hours on the Ayr Gold Cup market, Gulliver is the most backed in that period.

The five-year-old sparked interest when finishing third to Buffer Zone at the Curragh on Sunday. Out of the picture for much of the race, he showed an impressive turn of foot to finish a couple of lengths behind the winner.

Buffer Zone is the current 8/1 favourite for Saturday’s Ayr Gold Cup, but a 5lb penalty could make all the difference. As a result, the 33/1 about Gulliver has quickly disappeared, with punters continuing to side with O’Meara’s charge.

Stablemate Summerghand is actually a shorter price with some bookies at 10/1. The second favourite was last seen finishing second to recently withdrawn Dakota Gold at Ripon.

William Haggas’ Victory Day had been the ante-post favourite, but was omitted from the final entries.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “David O’Meara’s yard dominates this market, with three of his horses in the top four.

“In a race packed with previous winners and in-form runners, punters are gambling on Gulliver getting a clearer run than he did at the Curragh on Sunday to give his trainer a second Ayr success in five years.”
