Day 3: Tips and Insight for Each Race
Turners Novices’ Chase
Day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival kicks off with the Turners Novice’s Chase and it really is a blockbuster battle to kick off the day’s races. This is one rare occasion where the small field does not detract from the race itself as Bob Olinger and Galopin Des Champs do battle. This really could be a classic and it’s one that is not to be missed. Our racing expert Stu Williams has tipped Galopin Des Champs to do the business.
He had this to say: “This looks like being a match race between Bob Olinger and Galopin Des Champs, with marginal preference for the latter. Both possess superstar potential at this stage; however, last year’s Martin Pipe winner could prove very hard to peg back if jumping for fun out in-front and he could even rekindle memories of Willie Mullins former superstar chaser Vautour, who dazzled when making virtually all in this contest in 2015, such is the level of his ability.”

Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle
Traditionally this is not a strong race for Irish trainers because they don’t have many qualifying races for it however the past two races have been won by Irish horses (both trained by Patrick Kelly). He has two horses in this one this year – Presenting Percy and Mall Dini.
In terms of betting, Sassy Yet classy (trained by Gordon Elliott) has taken 18% of punters bets, she has been the winner of four hurdle races and a NH flat race from 2m to 3m on ground varying from good - yielding to heavy. Beaten a neck by Futurum Regem when second of 21 at 16-1 on her latest outing in a hurdle race at Navan over 2m 4f (good - yielding) in December last year.
Sire Du Berlais is the second most backed (also trained by Gordon Elliott), taking 16% of bets, she has won four hurdle races from 2m 1f to 3m on ground varying from good to soft - heavy.
Ryanair Chase
Perhaps the most fancied selection of the day comes in the Ryanair Chase in the form of Allaho taking 69% of bets. Current best odds of 4/6 to win and it does seem like a foregone conclusion. He is a winner of a hurdle race and five chases from 2m 4f to 3m on ground varying from good to soft to soft - heavy. He won on his latest outing in a Grade 2 chase when 4-11fav in the Grade 2 Jockey Hotel Chase at Thurles over 2m 4f (good - yielding) in January, beating Fakir D'Oudairies impressively by 12l. The heavy rain that Cheltenham has seen will only help his cause.
There are other strong names in this one with Conflated, El Dorado Allen and Shan Blue. This could be one to bet without the favourite. For example, Conflated can be backed at best odds 5/2 without Allaho. Certainly one angle worth considering.
Stayers’ Hurdle
This is undoubtedly the trickiest Championship race of the entire week as a punter given that virtually all the main protagonists have at some stage sparkled and on other occasions disappointed.
Flooring Porter leads the way in the market and is current favourite (best odds 4/1) taking 18% of punters bets through oddschecker
Our horse racing expert Stuart Williams is also tipping this horse, he had this to say:
“The Irish do appear to hold a strong hand in this race and while I respect the chances of Klassical Dream, the fact that he isn’t fresh is a concern that I can’t overlook. With that in mind, I’ll side with Flooring Porter, who may well have beaten Klassical Dream at Christmas but for the somewhat unconventional start and who may still be on the upgrade given his age.”

Paddy Power Plate
This Grade 3 Handicap chase is another race with a huge field with 22 runners set to take to the Cheltenham turf. In terms of the most backed in the market Grand Paradis (9/1) has taken 16% of bets, The Glancing Queen (11/2) has taken 15% of bets and Imperial Alcazar (6/1) has taken 11% of bets. This really is a wide-open race and now with the rain on Wednesday it makes it even more open and a much more difficult race to win.
Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle
The most backed in this market are:
• Dino Blue (5/2) 32% of bets
• Party Central (7/1) 9% of bets
• Brandy Love (5/1) 8% of bets
• Love Envoi (16/1) 7% of bets
• Nurse Susan (20/1) 4% of bets
Dino Blue is the favourite for this one, she is half-sister to Blue Sari, won in NH flat race at 2m, over hurdles at 2m 4f and in a chase at 2m 4f. Won on her latest outing in a maiden hurdle race when evens fav at Clonmel over 2m 1f (heavy) in January, beating La Prima Donna by 15l.
Kim Muir Challenge Cup
This is again a wide-open one with 25 runners but with the form of the Paddy Power Chase being well franked since, there is likely to be plenty more to come from School Boy Hours as Derek O'Connor, who won this race in 2019, takes the ride.
Frontal Assault has a very similar profile to Gordon Elliott's last winner of this race (Milan Native in 2020), and his stablemate Smoking Gun looks one of the better treated by the British handicapper. Ain't That A Shame was unlucky to be beaten close home at Navan last time out, while fellow novice Come On Teddy was third in the Pertemps Final last year.
