King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2022: Ante-Post Tips & Preview

King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2022: Ante-Post Tips & Preview

Andy Holding looks over the key players for the most anticipated race at Ascot, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Sadly, this year's King George will be without one of its main attractions, Derby winner Desert Crown, but that shouldn't detract from the fact the mid-summer 1m4f showpiece will still have a classy field assembled.

Who is the favourite?

Westover (best price 11/8), Derby third and subsequent winner of the Irish equivalent, heads the current market around the 5/4 mark and for those looking to pile into the short-priced favourite will no doubt have been encouraged by all the recent upbeat vibes coming from the Kimpton camp.

The way the son of Frankel routed his peers at the Curragh backs up the view of his pilot Colin Keane that he could be "the best I've ever ridden" and with one or two showers forecast in the Berkshire area later in the week a welcome piece of news for connections, he looks the one to beat on all known form.

Who can possibly challenge?

Emily Upjohn looks like being rerouted after unfortunately having to miss her intended target in the Irish Oaks due to travel complications, and there's no doubt the presence of John & Thady Gosden's filly gives the race more substance both in terms of pure competition and as a betting medium.

Using Oaks winner Tuesday as a good guide, however, it's questionable whether the daughter of Sea The Stars will prove good enough to beat the colts and at this stage, she makes limited appeal at her current odds.

And what about those at the biggest prices?

The same camp do have Mishriff (best price 5/1) as a viable contender and at this stage, he would stand out as the value each-way alternative to the favourite. Extremely unlucky not to land the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown last time out, the five-year-old is a multiple Group 1 winner and has plenty of top-class 1m4f form to call upon.

Of the rest, last season's shock Arc winner Torquator Tasso (best price 11/1) arrives here in decent shape having bounced back to form at Hamburg last time, while Broome (best price 14/1) has to enter calculations being one of the few C&D winners in the line-up.
