King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2022: Tips, Runners & Prediction

The Racing Weekly panel sat down to look ahead to the feature race at Ascot this weekend, with Rishi Persad, Sam Turner and Pat Cooney all agreeing on the horse to beat.

Despite there only being six declarations for the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes the race will certainly draw plenty of attention with ‘a high class lineup’ going head to head on Saturday.

Racing Weekly host, Rishi Persad began this weeks episode by looking at the pace angle, opening the floor up to see who the panel thought would make the running. Turner and Cooney both agreed ‘The pace angles look to be either Broome or Pyledriver.’

Broome and Pyledriver currently sit at the foot of the market at 18/1 and 33/1 with concerns over their ability to keep pace at the business end of the race.

Tuner said of Broome, ‘He’s a remorseless galloper, but hasn’t really got a change of gear as such, not compared to say and Emily Upjohn.’

Bet365’s Pat Cooney had ground concerns for Arc winner and current 12/1 shot, Torquator Tasso, ‘I was looking at Torquator Tasso, someone said to me why is he 12/1 well he won the Arc on heavy ground didn’t he so can he come out and win a King George on fast ground that remains to be seen.’

Into the top half of the market, Persad was keen on the chances of Mishriff who he thought could travel on well in the latter stages of the race to pick up second.

At the top of the market all three were in agreement that Westover remains a worthy favourite, with Persad expecting the three-year-old to ‘take all the beating.’

Pat Cooney was also impressed when rewatching the Irish Derby, ‘‘It was only this morning when I watched it back that I thought my god that was ultra-impressive’.

Horse racing expert, Sam Turner, praised the horses temperament; ‘(Westover) ‘uncomplicated horse that settles well, has that acceleration and I think he will be a hard horse to fetch out on the Ascot straight.’

‘I think Westover will surely get a similar sort of ride all being well as at the Curragh, sit on the quarters of the pace setters, turn for home, kick, and pull the speed out of one or two of the others.’
