Who is the favourite to win the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby?

Last year's King George winner Bravemansgame, trained by Paul Nicholls, is the 4/5 favourite on William Hill to win the 2023 Charlie Hall Chase. The eight-year-old followed up his Boxing Day win at Kempton by finishing 2nd behind Galopin Des Champs in the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Friday’s Racing at the Charlie Hall Chase Meeting

Race 2 on Friday, the 3-mile Novice Chase, looks to be a particular highlight with entries indicating a potential rematch between the Sefton 1-2 from the Grand National Festival.

Lucinda Russell’s star mare makes her chasing debut after improving from a mark of 111 in December to 141 in April. If she can employ similar front running tactics then she could be hard to peg back.

Whilst Donald McCain’s Maximilian has a firm case that he could overturn the form on Friday. The son of Adlerflug was put away for a break after accounting for the Albert Bartlett winner, Stay Away Fay, in the Grade 2 River Don at Doncaster.

As said the form was given the best boost possible with the Nicholls horse in 2nd winning at Cheltenham, and he was coming off a 76-day break when running at Aintree where he was only beat 1 ¾ lengths by Lucinda Russell’s mare. He hit the last that day and Brian Hughes made an error up the run-in holding the reins, so it’s not like everything went perfectly either.

These two won’t solely have it between them, however, with Dan Skelton’s Grey Dawning and Joe Tizzard’s The Changing Man. Grey Dawning went off a shorter price than both the above for the Sefton, courtesy of his Grade2 Leamington victory at Warwick, and it was too early to tell what would have happened when he came down at the 9th.

The Changing Man ran a highly respectable 8th in the Pertemps Network Final at Cheltenham 2023, beaten only five lengths, and ended the season on a mark of 132. If the son of Walk in the Park improves for fences than he could be on the premises.

The feature on Friday is 2m 3 ½ f Premier Handicap chase run at 3.00 where Topham winner Bill Baxter heads the entries alongside course winners Famous Bridge, No Risk Des Flos and Karl Phillipe. Finally, the 2 mile novice hurdle at 4.10 has some eye catching entries including Jonjo O’Neil’s Johnnywho, Olly Murphy’s Little Miss Dante and Indeevar Blue as well as Lucinda Russell’s Primoz.

Saturday’s Racing at the Charlie Hall Meeting

The opening Novice Hurdle has some interesting entries with both Whistle Stop Tour, who beat the aforementioned Primoz in a Point, and Laura Morgan’s Wild Side of Life catching the eye.

Race 3 is a Listed Mares hurdle which includes Cheltenham Festival winner You Wear It Well who now returns to race against her own sex after finishing a very respectable 5th in the Mersey at Aintree behind Irish Point.

Kateira was 2nd in that race and is entered as well on Saturday in an exciting rematch. The West Yorkshire Hurdle is run next with Thyme Hill starting his season back over hurdles. Gary Moore’s Botox Has, who hasn’t been since finishing 4th in the Cleeve on Trials Day, is also entered.

The feature, the Charlie Hall Chase, is due to be run at 3.00. Bravemansgame (12/1 third favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup) leads the entries with Paul Nicholls confirming the gelding is set to run as long as the ground doesn’t become too quick. Ahoy Senor, who was disappointing in this last year when last of five behind Bravemansgame, is also given an entry.

Perhaps more interesting is Midnight River for the Skeltons. A course winner as a novice, his win at Aintree has put handicaps out of reach for the time being and he may be able to make his mark at this level with the Skeltons known for being ready for early season targets. Both Protektorat’s Betfair Chase and Shan Blue’s 2021 performance in this race come to mind.

Charlie Hall Meeting 2023 Tips

The Wild Side of Life is very interesting in the opening novice hurdle on Saturday; however, if he runs, Botox Has is also an eye-catching entry in the West Yorkshire Hurdle. His seasonal reappearance record reads 11F2 and many of these will be entered with runs in Handicap chases in mind.
