Lossiemouth is considered one of the big bankers on Day 1 at Cheltenham.
The David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle is a recent addition to the Cheltenham Festival having been incepted to the week in 2008. Although Willie Mullins holds an exemplary record of nine wins in that time, he has not won the race since Benie Des Dieux’s win in 2018.
Of his nine wins, six were provided by Quevega who won the race every year from 2009-2014. However, the most notable of Mullins’ victories was in 2015 when Annie Power fell at the last flight with the race in the bag. Rich Ricci’s mare was the last horse of a popular four leg accumulator on the day and her fall saved the bookies from a multi-million pound payout.
Incredibly, Mullins still won the race with Glens Melody. Last year racing legend Honeysuckle signed off her career with victory in the race in what was her fourth Festival success after two Champion Hurdles and the 2020 renewal of the Mares’.

Willie Mullins is likely to extend his great record in the Mares’ Hurdle with Lossiemouth.
The talented five-year-old has won all but one of her starts and was a brilliant winner of the Unibet Hurdle here in January, where she beat race-fit rivals.
That victory extended her unbeaten record at the course, having taken last year’s Triumph Hurdle at this fixture. The Ricci-owned mare appears to have little, if any, flaws in her armoury and is among the most backed selections across all horses on Day 1 at the Festival.
